When to Replace Tyres?

Knowing when to replace your car tyres is incredibly important and the easiest way to do this is to ensure that you regularly check your tyres and to know how far you have travelled with them. We recommend rotating your tyres every 5000 to 7000 miles and tyre pressure should be checked every few weeks. It is also important to be aware that the legal tyre tread in Ireland is 1.6mm.

We have provided our clients with a checklist to ensure you choose the right tyres and maintain them correctly:

- Always select the right tyre for your vehicle.
- Perform regular visual inspections of your tyres to check their condition.
- Make sure to check the tread depth to ensure that they are safe and legal.
- Maintain the correct tyre pressure at all times.
- Always fit tyres two or four at a time and, if only fitting two tyres, always fit them at the rear.
- Have your wheels aligned.

  3. Inspect tread depth to ensure tyres are safe and legal
  4. Maintain correct inflation pressures
  5. Fit tyres in sets of two or four. If just two fit them to the rear
  6. Consider a wheel alignment check to ensure tyres wear evenly

All You Need to Know About Tyre Care:

  1. Selection and fitment: when fitting replacement tyres ensure they are of the same size, load index and speed symbol as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
  2. Visual tyre care: by visually checking your tyres on a regular basis you can help maintain them in good condition throughout their service life and prevent having them changed unnecessarily or even failing prematurely. Check all tyres, including the spare, for: stones, nails, oil, fuel, print, damage, ageing and tyre tread wear.
  3. Tread depth inspection: always ensure your tyres conform to the UK & Ireland minimum legal tread depth requirement of 1.6mm. This means your tyres should have at least 1.6mm of tread left across the central three quarters of the tyre tread breadth and around the entire circumference of the tyre.
  4. Tyre pressure: maintaining the correct tyre pressure is an important factor in both the safety and longevity of tyres. Too little or too much air could adversely affect the vehicle handling and the tyre's performance and durability.
  5. Tyre positioning and handling: when replacing car tyres the ideal situation would be to replace all four tyres together. However as vehicles wear their front and rear tyres at different rates, this may not always be done. In this case, we recommend to fit new tyres to the rear and move the part worn rear tyres to the front.
  6. Alignment: vehicle suspension misalignment can result in rapid, irregular tyre wear, which is bad news for your pocket and can affect the handling and safety of the vehicle.
